I Dilettanti


I Dilettanti is a project conceived by countertenor Xavier Sabata that explores the relationship between intimacy and creativity, between family heritage and musical practice. Inspired by the tradition of the dilettanti—people who engage with the arts not out of professional obligation but out of passion and vital interest—the album, released by the Aparté Music label, proposes an authentic, rooted, and unmediated artistic practice.

My collaboration consisted of accompanying and amplifying this intimate perspective through creative direction and visual production. The challenge was to translate a deeply personal experience to an international audience while respecting its artisanal and emotional character.

Own contribution

  • Creative direction and visual conceptualization: translating Sabata’s personal ideas into a coherent and poetic visual universe.
  • Black-and-white analogue photography: evoking memory and roots while highlighting the project’s artisanal nature.
  • Production and editing of the EPK (Electronic Press Kit): recording interviews and promotional materials in locations tied to the singer’s personal history.
  • Album cover and booklet photoshoot: carried out in Avià (Catalonia), his hometown, in an atmosphere full of personal meaning. 

    The shoot featured the baroque ensemble Latinitas Nostra, also part of the musical recording. The project was conceived as both a celebration of the role of the dilettanti in music history and a declaration of principles about enjoying the arts as a vital experience.



    Camerata nuova (2013)


    The 7th Europäische Opernregie-Preis, organized by Camerata nuova, was the stage where stage director Rafael R. Villalobos presented an innovative proposal for Cavalleria Rusticana (P. Mascagni) and Pagliacci (R. Leoncavallo).

    My participation consisted of providing creative support in developing the scenic concept, contributing references from contemporary cinema and television to visually translate Villalobos’ ideas. The project was selected for presentation in Vienna, where it won the second prize (the highest award granted in that edition).

    Own contribution

    • Research and provision of visual references: contemporary cinema and television as material to shape the stage proposal.
    • Support during the creative process and presentation: contributing to conceptualization and defense of the project before the jury in Vienna.
    • Assistance during operatic premiere: collaboration in the staging of Noye’s Fludde (Benjamin Britten) at Wiesbaden’s Lutherkirche, October 2013.

    This project consolidated a creative partnership with Villalobos, grounded in the intersection of scenic, audiovisual, and contemporary cultural languages.





    Dido and Aeneas (2012–2017)


    Between 2012 and 2017 I collaborated with Rafael R. Villalobos on two productions revisiting Henry Purcell’s baroque opera Dido and Aeneas from a contemporary perspective.

    The first project, A Welcome Guest (2012), was a micro-opera for a solo performer premiered in Barcelona, which explored concentrating opera into an intimate and experimental format. Through Ellen James, we took on production, photography, and video, as well as poster design, playbill, and multimedia adaptations.

    Later, in 2015, commissioned by Teatro Real, Villalobos returned to the work with an ironic and updated re-reading that combined stage and audiovisual languages. Premiered in Madrid, the production Dido and Aeneas, a Hipster Tale incorporated projections created and directed by me, establishing a visual dialogue with the characters and emotions of the piece.

    In both cases, my contribution included creative direction, audiovisual production, and the development of visual and promotional materials, with the goal of translating Villalobos’ stage experimentation into a coherent and evocative visual language.

    Own contribution

    • A Welcome Guest → Production, photography, and video: documentation and creation of audiovisual materials linked to the work. Design of promotional materials: poster, playbill, and multimedia adaptations of Villalobos’ work. Creative and conceptual support: translating the scenic universe into visual and graphic language.
    • Dido and Aeneas, a Hipster Tale → Audiovisual production and creation: development of projections and visuals for the scenography. Creative direction of projected images: creating a hybrid atmosphere between classical and contemporary. Narrative integration: using audiovisual language to reinforce themes of desire, jealousy, and fragility within the story.
